Clown teaches children not to scramble their brains

ROSELLE:-Chips the Clown returned to the Roselle Public Library to conduct two "Protect A Good Egg" safety shows for the residents of Roselle.  More than 70 people attended the tow 35 minute interactive skits which were designed to teach children and their parents about the importance of preventing traumatic brain injuries.

The free shows were held in conjunction with a four-week exhibition of 300 colorful Humpty Dumpty collectible items. These performances were sponsored by the Humpty Dumpty Association which was founded in 1991 by Roselle residents Julius (a.k.a. Chips) and Arlene Carallo as a memorial to their son, Paul D. Carallo.

Chips uses the Humpty Dumpty theme to communicate to spectators that their brains are as fragile as eggs and need protecting. (Remember Humpty Dumpty's fatal fall!)

He advocates the wearing of seatbelts when riding in a car as well as sports helmets when biking, skateboarding, roller-blading, etc. His playful antics have a special way of getting the message across and keeping the children laughing.

If you ask Chips why he performs safety shows, he'll explain, "My son died once, but parents of children with TBI (traumatic brain injury) tell me their child dies every day-that's why I do this." Most traumatic brain injuries are preventable and the lifetime cost of caring for a child with TBI is estimated at $4.5 million, according to Chips.

Chips the Clown closed each show by making colorful balloon hats for the children to take home. He plans to return to the Roselle Public Library in August to treat the children who have participated in the library's summer reading program with face painting fun. The Humpty Dumpty Association is a non-profit organization that welcomes your support.
